How to Learn Your Hair Type

Understanding your hair type is the first step to achieving healthy, strong, and beautiful hair. Every hair type has unique needs—what works for one person may not work for another. By identifying your hair type, you can choose the right oils, shampoos, and care routines to keep your hair at its best.

Step 1: Understand the Four Basic Hair Types

Hair is generally categorized into four main types based on texture and curl pattern:

    1. Type 1 – Straight Hair
Smooth and sleek, this hair type lacks natural curls or waves. It tends to get oily faster because natural scalp oils travel easily down the hair shaft.

    2. Type 2 – Wavy Hair
Naturally bends or forms an “S” shape. It has a mix of straight and curly characteristics—soft waves that may frizz in humidity.

    3. Type 3 – Curly Hair
Defined curls that form spirals or ringlets. It’s usually more prone to dryness and frizz, needing extra hydration and gentle care.

    4. Type 4 – Coily or Kinky Hair
Very tight curls or zig-zag patterns. This type is fragile, dense, and tends to be dry because scalp oils struggle to travel down the strands.

Step 2: Perform the Hair Type Test

You can easily determine your hair type with this simple test:

    1. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and don’t apply any conditioner or product.

    2. Let it air dry naturally.

    3. Observe your hair’s natural texture and pattern once dry:

      • If it’s straight, you’re Type 1.

      • If it forms gentle waves, you’re Type 2.

      • If it curls into spirals, you’re Type 3.

      • If it forms tight coils or zigzags, you’re Type 4.

    Step 3: Consider Other Factors

Your hair type isn’t just about curl pattern—it also includes:

    • Porosity (how well your hair absorbs moisture)

    • Thickness (individual strand diameter)

    • Density (how much hair you have on your scalp)

Testing these helps you understand how your hair responds to oils, heat, and products.

Step 4: Build a Routine That Matches Your Hair Type

Once you know your hair type, you can create a care routine that truly works for you.

    • Straight Hair: Light oils like moringa or argan prevent greasiness.

    • Wavy Hair: Use coconut or jojoba oil for balance and shine.

    • Curly Hair: Deep-conditioning with shea butter or castor oil enhances curls.

    • Coily Hair: Heavy oils and creams lock in moisture and reduce breakage.

    Final Thoughts

Learning your hair type helps you embrace your natural texture and care for it the right way. With the right products, oils, and a consistent routine, you can transform your hair’s health and appearance from the roots up.

The Google Pixel 4A currently tops our rank of the greatest Samsung phones available, beating even the pricier iPhone Ultra Max Mega.

So unsurprisingly this is an absolutely fantastic phone. The design isn't massively changed from the previous generation, but most other elements upgraded.
