Tips for Healthy Hair
Healthy Hair Care Advice from Dermatologists
Want hair that looks strong, shiny, and healthy? The way you wash, style, and care for your hair plays a huge role in its overall health. Board-certified dermatologists share these expert tips to help you prevent damage, reduce hair loss, and keep your hair looking its best.
1. Know Your Hair Type
Understanding your hair type—whether straight, wavy, curly, coily, fine, or coarse—will guide you toward the right products and care routine. Hair types are often described with numbers and letters, ranging from straight and fine to thick and tightly coiled. Always choose shampoos, conditioners, and styling products designed for your specific texture.
2. Wash Based on Your Needs
How often you should shampoo depends on your scalp and hair type:
Straight or oily hair: You may need to wash daily to control oil buildup.
Dry, textured, or curly hair: Shampoo less frequently—about once every 2–3 weeks or as needed.
Notice flakes? This may be due to washing too infrequently or not using the right conditioner, oil, or scalp moisturizer.
3. Focus Shampoo on the Scalp
When shampooing, apply it mainly to your scalp, not the full length of your hair. This helps remove dirt, oil, and product buildup without stripping natural moisture from your strands.
4. Always Use Conditioner
Conditioner is key for soft, manageable hair:
Fine or straight hair: Apply conditioner only to the ends.
Dry, curly, or textured hair: Apply from roots to ends for full hydration.
5. Detangle Gently
Wet hair is fragile and prone to breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush:
Curly or thick hair: Comb in the shower while conditioner is still in.
Straight hair: Let it partially air-dry before combing.
Always start detangling from the ends and work your way up to minimize breakage.
6. Dry with Care
Avoid rough towel drying, which causes frizz and damage. Instead, gently wrap your hair in a soft towel or T-shirt to absorb moisture.
7. Limit Heat Styling
Excessive heat weakens hair over time. To protect your strands:
Reduce blow-drying, flat ironing, and curling.
Use low to medium heat settings.
Apply a heat protectant product before styling.
